Very Sad news. Past chair of SPRA, Bill Redmond, has died.
At SPRA, we received the sad news last week about Bill. He had been suffering from poor health for some time and spent his last 2 years in Westbury care home. He died on Sunday 5th November with his devoted wife Christine and family around him.
Bill was chair of SPRA for over 7 years until 2014 and his time in the chair was marked with great “wins” for SPRA, not least the acquisition of the old Bristol and West sports ground. Private funding allowed the land to be turned over to a nature reserve managed by Avon Wildlife Trust to keep for the preservation of the Avon Gorge Conservation corridor.
Bill was a great raconteur and arranged a number of summer parties, kindly hosted at the home of the Mathews family, which many residents enjoyed over the years.
Bill worked in a senior capacity for John Lewis for much of his working life and SPRA gained the benefit of his organisational skills and his ability to manage people with skill and grace. When Bill was around, we all knew who was in charge!
Under Bill’s chairmanship, SPRA flourished and the area and its residents benefitted by having a strong identity which was acknowledged within the city itself, and nationally when Sneyd park was voted several years running as one of the UK’s most desirable places to live.
Bill, with the use of his old school charm and wit, always managed to get things done. He will be missed.
For anyone wishing to attend Bill’s funeral, it is at 10am on Wednesday 29th November 2023 at St Mary’s church on Mariners Drive. There will be a family-only cremation directly afterwards and lunch at the church hall from 12pm. There is a limit on numbers for lunch, so please RSVP to Bill’s daughter, Kate.
The family have asked for no flowers, but donations instead are preferred to the ‘Christmas appeal MND association’.
For further information, do contact us here, along with your own contact details, and we can pass this onto the family.
